Vehicle Dashboard Lights and Fault Indicators

The following is a not exhaustive list of some of the common vehicle dashboard lights and warning messages that you will find on modern vehicles.

Depending on your vehicle and it's facilities these are typically displayed on the dashboard, in the vehicle driving informing system within the dashboard and possibly the vehicle's LCD information system where fitted.

At Advanced Motorcare we have the relevant equipment to read, diagnose and rectify the relevant fault's for any vehicle.

Vehicle Diagnostics and Fault Repair

OK, so one of the lights is on or you are receiving a fault message on your car? Continous indication of a fault must mean there is a problem with the system in question. To identify and resolve the potential problem we need to connect your car to one of our Diagnostics Computers, read the code, and identify the fault.

We provide a packaged diagnostics service which includes reading and clearing the fault code, initial diagnosis of the problem and advice on a permanent resolution. See our Vehicle Diagnostics Package

Vehicle ABS Warning Indicator

ABS (anti-lock braking system) system warning

The ABS (Anti Lock Braking System) warning will typically illuminate for a short period when the ignition is turned on and the system is checked.

The indicator will typically flash if the the ABS system is activated (during heavy braking etc.).

Staying on continuously or flashing when not breaking typically indicates a fault and that the ABS will have been de-activated. At this stage you must have the system checked to identify the problem.

Leaving the system unchecked may cause further damage to the system and could invalidate your insurance in the event of an accident as this indicates the braking system is not fully operational.

Vehicle battery warning light

Battery / Charging / Electrical System Fault

The Battery/Charging system indicator will typically illuminate for a short period when the ignition is turned on and the system is checked.

Continuous illumination indicates a possible problem with the battery/charging or ignition system. At this stage you must have the system checked to identify the problem.

Leaving the system unchecked may cause further damage, particularly where the battery is concerned, and difficulty in starting the vehicle.

Vehicle brake warning light

Braking System Fault

The braking system/handbrake indicator will typically illuminate when the ignition is turned on and the system is checked.

The light will remain illuminated whenever the vehicle handbrake is applied.

If the light stays on continuously whilst driving this may indicate the handbrake has been left engaged (ensure the handbrake is off!).

If the vehicle handbrake is off this indicates a fault with the braking system and it should be checked immediately to ensure the correct operation of the braking systems.

Car Engine Diagnostic Indicator Light

Engine Management System Fault

The Engine Management Indicator light will typically illuminate for a short period when the ignition is turned on and the system is checked.

If the light stays on continuously this indicates a possible problem with the engine management systems and should be checked and the earliest opportunity.

Whilst driving the vehicle is usually OK for short periods, the engine will not be running at it's optimum and the system should be checked as soon as possible.

Leaving the system unchecked may cause further damage and will invalidate your warranty if not dealt with rapidly.

Vehicle low oil warning light

Engine Oil Level / Pressure Fault

The engine low oil pressure indicator will typically illuminate for a short period when the ignition is turned on and the system is checked.

If the light stays on continuously this indicates low engine oil pressure and you should check the levels of the engine oil and top up accordingly, or visit us and we will gladly check and to up as required.

When topping up with oil always ensure the correct type and grade of oil is used; failure to follow manufacturers guidelines and using incorrect oil can damage your engine and will invalidate your warranty.

Failure to check the oil and top up accordingly can cause severe engine damage.

Vehicle traction control warning light

or

Vehicle traction control warning light

Traction Control / Stability Programmme Fault

The Traction Control / Stability Programme light is only applicable to cars fitted with Traction Control, Sometimes referred to as "Stability Programme, Dynamic Stability Control (DSC)" and may vary between manufacturers.

This light typically illuminates for a short period when the ignition is turned on and the system is checked.

The light will typically flash when the system is activated (during heavy breaking, cornering, slipping in snow or on mud etc.).

Vehicles are usually equipped with a button to switch the system off, in this case the light will typically remain illuminated to warn the driver the system is off.

If the light remains lit even when switched on, flashed continuously or is generally more apparent than usual then you should have the system checked as soon as possible. This may indicate a problem with the control unit itself or the braking system / engine management system.

Vehicle tyre pressure warning light

Tyre Pressure Fault

This indicator is only applicable to cars fitted with tyre pressure monitoring systems.

The Type Pressure indicator light typically illuminates for a short period when the ignition is turned on and the system is checked.

If the light remains illuminated, and typically accompanied by a warning tone, then one or more of the tyres has suffered a tyre loss and should be checked. This could indicate a sudden puncture or slow air leak.

If the tyres appear OK but the light remains illuminated, or one of the tyres has recently been changed, this could indicate a problem with one of the tyre sensors, or that the system needs to be reset.

Initial diagnosis can be completed by reading your owners manual and "resetting" the system; however this should only be completed once the tyre pressures have been checked.

For ongoing problems we can diagnose any tyre problems, sensors and reset the system accordingly.

NOTE:

Many of these indicators maybe accompanied by warning tones, or where digital displays / On Board Computer systems etc. are installed a warning message to indicate the area of concern. However they are displayed, each area should be correctly investigated and correctly remedied as soon as possible to avoid causing further damage.

This list is far from exhaustive and modern cars may have further indicators and systems. At Advanced Motorcare we have access to the tools and knowledge to analyse and interpret the causes of these problems and advise accordingly.
